Some facts and figures about Svalbard Airport:
Svalbard Airport Longyear is unique in many ways. It is claimed to be the world’s most northern full service
airport. It has a runway length of 2
300 x 45 meters, ILS on runway 10 and localizer on runway 28, VASIS and
high intensity runway lights. It has daily scheduled jet service to/from Tromso and Oslo by Scandinavian Airlines
(MD82) and Braatens (B737) as well as turboprop service by Lufttransport A/S (Dornier Do228-202K, LN-LYR) to the
Svalbard destinations Ny-Aalesund and Sveagruva. There are also helicopter services to whatever destination on
Svalbard. Sporadic tourist charter flights are also handled. The airport has handled wide-bodied aircraft’s like
Mc Donnel-Douglas DC10, Lockheed L1011 and Airbus A300. Svalbard Airport Longyear has AFIS service and the
geographic area covered by the flight information service is huge. It covers the area of 76o to 81o North and 10o to
30o East, and this is equal to the combined area of England and Wales. The airport is also unique as it handles
the coastal radio and weather information services for the Svalbard region.

Some few biz jets and general aviation aircrafts attracts the airport. The almost 1000 km over-water
flight in arctic conditions  between Tromso and Svalbard Airport must be planned with great care.
