Vestmannaeyjar is a group of islands with high volcanic activity. In 1973 five thousand people was evacuated from the
main island Heimaey due to a volcanic eruption. Three hundred houses was destroyed during this eruption. Today
the community on Heimaey is restored. Part of the more then one million cubic meters of ash that covered the
community has been used during the construction of the Vestmannaeyjar Airport.
